BJP’s Devaraje Gowda – accused of sexual assault – taken to alleged place of crime for questioning

BJP leader Devaraje Gowda was arrested by Karnataka police over fouty days after sexual assault charges were filed against him by a woman from Hassan district.

Karnataka BJP leader G Devaraje Gowda, arrested for alleged molestation and rape on Saturday, 11 May has been taken to Holenarasipura in Hassan for questioning say the police. He was arrested based on a complaint from a 36-year-old woman, who had claimed she had recorded all the video and audio calls that Gowda made to her, where he reportedly misbehaved with her.

The complaints against Devaraje Gowda include casteist slurs and molestation and sexual assault of a woman under the pretext of helping her sell her property and he has been taken to the taluk where the incident allegedly took place.

Gowda first hit the headlines when it emerged that he wrote to the party leadership about sexual abuse videos allegedly featuring JD(S) MP and its Lok Sabha candidate from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna. Speaking to South First amidst calls for the arrest of Revanna, the BJP leader had claimed that he had written to both the BJP’s national and state leadership about the illegal activities of not just Revanna but also his family.

Additionally, he had also demanded that the Karnataka government hand over the probe in the sexual abuse case against Prajwal Revanna to the CBI.

While the police were on the lookout for Gowda after a couple filed two different cases against him, audio and video clips where he reportedly displayed his private parts started circulating on social media platforms. After 40 days, the police finally arrested him on Friday based on a tip-off from their Hassan counterparts. The BJP leader has been arrested on various charges including sexual harassment and the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

During the 2023 assembly elections, Devaraje Gowda had unsuccessfully contested on a BJP ticket from the Holenarsipura seat and was defeated by JD(S) MLA and former minister H D Revanna.
