Tennis star Bjorn Borg, who was set to be felicitated by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday, 21 February, politely declined the honour after the latter failed to show up to the event on time.

The Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) had organised an event to felicitate the Swedish tennis player along with former Indian tennis player Vijay Amritraj.

The event did not take place due to the late arrival of Bommai, as reported by the Deccan Herald.

Why did Bjorn Borg leave?

The event, which was originally scheduled to take place at 9.15 am, was reportedly postponed to 10.30 am to accommodate the chief minister, who was running late.

The Grand Slam Champion was in Bengaluru for his son Leo, who is participating in the ongoing Bengaluru Open Tournament.

Borg politely declined the felicitation and left the programme at 11 am to watch his son’s match.

The chief minister arrived at the venue at 11.15 am. He watched the game for some time before leaving.

The ceremony did not take place at all because Amritraj declined to be felicitated alone.

CMO officials told South First, “The chief minister had a meeting to attend at the Vidhana Souda, which is why he could not arrive at the event on time. The organisers were informed about the delay beforehand.”

As of now, there are no plans to arrange for another felicitation ceremony, the officials stated.
