In a tragic incident on Tuesday evening, five people are feared dead after a coracle capsized near Baluti jackwell in the Krishna River, Kolhar taluka, near Vijayapura district in Karnataka.

The mishap occurred when seven men, allegedly gambling on the riverbank, attempted to flee the scene upon a police raid.

Two of the men, Sachin K and Basheer Honwad, managed to swim back to safety, while the coracle, hastily boarded in panic, capsized in the swollen river.

The deceased have been identified as Pundalik Yenkanchi, Tayub Choudhary, Dashrath Gowda, Rafeeq Bombay, and Mehaboob Valikar.

Vijayapura’s Additional Superintendent of Police Shankar K Marihal told South First, “The incident occurred when the seven men were playing cards on the bank of the Krishna River. Upon receiving information, the police raided the location.”

He continued, “In a panic to escape, the men hastily boarded a nearby coracle belonging to fishermen. However, while they were escaping, the coracle capsized, resulting in five drowning, and the remaining two swimming back to safety.”

“The firefighters have launched a search operation and have managed to recover three bodies so far. The search is still ongoing for the remaining two bodies,” ASP Marihal added.

The authorities hope to conclude the search operation within the next few hours.
