A 40-year-old man, Balamurugan, allegedly shot his 39-year-old estranged wife, Bhuvaneshwari, while she was returning home from work in Bengaluru on Tuesday, 24 December.

The accused has been arrested and a case of murder has been registered, police said, adding that further investigation is underway.

Balamurugan, a software engineer, fled the scene after shooting her. He then walked into Magadi Road police station, confessed to the crime and surrendered.

Bhuvaneshwari sustained bullet injuries and was rushed to Shanbhag Hospital in Basaveshwaranagar, where she was declared dead.

According to the police, the couple had been married for 14 years but had been living separately for the past one-and-a-half years due to marital discord.

The accused allegedly suspected his wife of having an extramarital affair, while she was seeking legal separation. He received the legal notice seeking divorce a week ago, to which he was opposed to.

The victim, who was working as an assistant manager at bank, had been transferred from Whitefield to Basaveshwaranagar branch about six months ago. She was living with their two children. However, the accused was unaware of her place of residence during that period.

He allegedly traced her whereabouts and moved to Cholurpalya in the KP Agrahara police station limits about four months ago.
