A 45-year-old software engineer died by suicide at an under-construction building in Nallurhalli, Bengaluru, on Wednesday, 3 December, allegedly following sustained harassment by a neighbouring couple and officials of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA).
The Whitefield police have arrested the couple, Usha Nambiar and Shashi Nambiar, on charges of abetment to suicide. Searches are under way for their son, Varun.
The victim, Murali, is survived by his wife and two children. According to his mother, Lakshmi Govindaraju, he had been constructing a house on a site his family purchased in 2018.
In her complaint to the police, she said the sellers of the plot were connected to the Nambiars, who allegedly began demanding ₹20 lakh from her son over a purported property dispute.
Murali’s mother alleged that the Nambiars frequently visited the construction site along with some personnel from the GBA and subjected her son to mental harassment after he refused to pay.
The couple also allegedly colluded with officials from the GBA to issue notices over the property to Murali.
The Nambiars had reportedly set a deadline of Wednesday for Murali to make the payment and had allegedly warned him of legal consequences if he failed to comply.
Murali left home on Wednesday morning and was later found hanging from a ceiling hook on the second floor of the under-construction structure.
A carpenter, Ganesh, who arrived for work, discovered the body and informed the family, police said.
Usha Nambiar is also alleged to have been visiting other under-construction buildings and layouts in the area and demanding money.
The couple would reportedly use the same method of threatening people in these buildings with legal consequences and notices from civic bodies.
