Siddaramaiah visits wall collapse site

Synopsis: At least seven people were killed when a compound wall at Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital in Bengaluru collapsed during heavy rain on Wednesday evening, with seven others injured and hospitalised. The downpour, following days of above-average heat, led to trees falling in at least 50 locations across the city by 5 pm.

At least seven people died after a compound wall of Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals in Bengaluru collapsed, as heavy rains lashed the city on the evening of Wednesday 29 April.

Seven more were injured and have been hospitalised. Many of the deceased were reportedly roadside vendors who were taking shelter near the wall of the hospital.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the site of the wall collapse and sought an explanation from officials. He has ordered an on-site investigation and reportedly raised concerns about alleged negligence on the part of officials.

The state government has announced compensation of ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased and has instructed that free treatment be provided to the injured.

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar too speaking with media, said, “I have spoken to the commissioner of police, that’s why I have cut off the meeting, and I am going to the spot immediately. I will see how we can help and what has to be done…”

Locals rushed to the site and began rescue efforts, pulling out a few individuals from the debris.

Heavy rains lashed the city on Wednesday evening after days of above-average heat. According to the Greater Bengaluru Authority command and control centre, trees fell in at least 50 places by 5 pm, including JP Nagar, Cubbon Park and Wilson Garden.

By 5.30 pm, the India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for the next three hours for several parts of the city.
