Senior officials of the Bengaluru Police told reporters that the bomb threat received by the National Hill View Public School administration turned out to be a hoax.

The Karnataka Police were on their toes after a private school located at Rajarajeshwari Nagar in Bengaluru received an email with a bomb threat on Monday, 18 July.

Senior officials of the Bengaluru City Police told reporters that the threat received by the National Hill View Public School administration turned out to be a hoax.

Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar, who owns the school, said, “As the school commenced today, we noticed an email from an unknown person sent to us Sunday, 17 July, evening. The email warned us about a bomb being planted in the school.”

He added: “We immediately informed the police about the email’s content and directed the school staff to vacate the classes.”

Search operation

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) West Laxman B Nirbargi said in a statement, “On learning about the bomb threat, security officials along with the bomb disposal squad and dog squad were rushed to the school.”

He added: “Around 1,500 students were vacated from the school and shifted to different units before a search operation was launched by our bomb and dog squads.”

The DCP further added that security officials searched the school campus, including the playground and parking area, for more than an hour.

“After an intense search, we concluded that the bomb threat was a hoax. The school declared a holiday for the day,” said Nirbargi.

On learning of the threat, panic-stricken parents rushed to the school.

Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said, “We took the alert seriously and followed protocols, as Bengaluru education institutions have received bomb threats earlier as well.”

He added: “The police department has been directed to identify the miscreant and take actions accordingly.”

Previous bomb threats

Six schools in the city received bomb threats through emails in April this year.

These were the New Academy School in Marathahalli, Delhi Public School in Sulakunte, Ebenezer International School in Electronics City, St Vincent Pallotti School in Hennur, Govindapura’s Indian Public School, and Mahadevapura’s Gopalan International School.

Then, too, the police declared the bomb threats to be hoaxes after a search operation.
