Bengaluru road rage: Woman beats auto driver with chappal after dispute, complaint filed

Synopsis: A woman assaulted an auto-rickshaw driver with her chappal in Bengaluru’s Bellandur area after a road rage incident on Saturday. The altercation, captured in a now-viral video, reportedly escalated when the driver began recording the dispute. Police are investigating the matter to determine the cause of the confrontation and verify the claims using CCTV footage.

A traffic altercation in Bengaluru’s Bellandur area turned violent on Saturday, 30 May, when a woman assaulted an auto-rickshaw driver with her chappal after accusing him of colliding with her two-wheeler.

The incident, which took place within the Whitefield police station limits, was captured on video and has since gone viral on social media.

The video shows the woman, speaking in Hindi, confronting the auto-rickshaw driver, identified as Lokesh. The dispute appears to have intensified after the driver began recording the argument on his phone.

The altercation comes weeks after a separate case of road rage in Bengaluru involving an Indian Air Force officer, who was caught on camera assaulting a local IT professional before falsely claiming to have been attacked.

Takes issue with driver recording altercation

“With whose permission are you making this video?” the woman demands in Hindi, attempting to snatch the phone from Lokesh’s hands. The driver responds that he does not require permission to record the incident.

The woman is then seen hitting Lokesh with her chappal while speaking to someone over the phone, complaining about the driver’s conduct.

“She was driving in the middle of the road and the auto did not even touch her vehicle. Anyone can check the CCTV cameras around the location for verification,” Lokesh says in the video.

A bystander intervenes and questions her behaviour: “Why are you beating the auto driver?” To this, the woman replies, “Don’t take sides,” and accuses the driver of verbally abusing her.

Complaint filed

Following the incident, Lokesh filed a complaint at the Whitefield police station.

“The auto driver, Lokesh, has filed a complaint with the Whitefield police station. Following this, an FIR has been registered. According to the driver’s version, the woman alleged that he collided with her two-wheeler and then beat him,” said Dr Shivakumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Whitefield, speaking to South First.

“We are investigating this complaint and trying to find out what led to this altercation and whether the auto collided with the two-wheeler or not. After thorough investigation, action will be taken accordingly.”
