Bengaluru police on Friday, 1 August, arrested two men for allegedly kidnapping and murdering a 13-year-old boy in the outskirts of Bengaluru.

The burnt body of the class 8 student was found in the forest area near Bilwaradahalli on Thursday, 31 July night, a day after he went missing.

According to the police, he left home to attend a tuition class at 5 pm on Wednesday, 30 July, but did not return until 8pm.

The panicked parents, then started searching for him, and found his bicycle near Arakere family park. They also received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number demanding ₹5 lakh ransom.

Based on this, the parents filed a missing and kidnapping case with Hulimavu police station.

Four police teams — three from Hulimavu Police Station and one from Begur police station — launched a search for the accused, by tracing the location of the caller. During the investigation, while reviewing the CCTV footage, the police also found that the boy was riding pillion on a bike with one of the accused.

However, before they could nab the accused, the boy’s burnt body was found in the forest.

Accused found in forest area

Police teams made a breakthrough in the early hours of Friday when they found the accused — Gurumurthy (25) and Gopi (27) — hiding in the same forest area where the boy’s body had been discovered.

The suspects attempted to attack the police team in an effort to escape, prompting officers to open fire and shoot both men in the legs. The accused were apprehended and are currently undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital. Injured officers also received medical attention.

According to the police, preliminary interrogation revealed that one of the accused, Gurumurthy, was known to the boy’s parents, as he had reportedly worked for them as a driver. He allegedly kidnapped the child for ransom.

“When the kidnapper learned that the child’s parents had filed a police complaint, they allegedly beat him to death and partially burned his body,” said SP C.K. Baba in a statement. The accused then attempted to destroy evidence

A separate FIR has also been registered at Bannerghatta Police Station invoking Sections 109(1), 121(2), 132, 222–2023, and Section 25 of the Arms Act.
