Synopsis: The woman alleged that the incident occurred while she was waiting for her cab when a man on a scooter approached her and asked, “What’s your rate?”, before making further intimidating remarks.
Bengaluru Police, on Tuesday, 28 July, have arrested a man accused of sexually harassing a woman who was waiting for a cab in the city’s Ramamurthy Nagar, following a complaint and a social media post by the survivor.
According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Bengaluru), an FIR has been registered at the Ramamurthynagar Police Station, and the accused has been taken into custody.
The woman alleged that the incident occurred while she was waiting for her cab when a man on a scooter approached her and asked, “What’s your rate?”, before making further intimidating remarks.
In a post on social media, the woman said she should be able to wait for a cab without being objectified or propositioned for money.
She further alleged that when she started recording the incident on her mobile phone, the accused noticed he was being filmed, verbally abused her and fled the spot.
The woman also shared the scooter’s registration number and appealed to authorities to identify the accused and take action. Following the complaint, police registered a case and arrested the suspect.
Calling for safer public spaces, the woman urged people not to normalise such behaviour. “Silence only emboldens offenders. Public spaces must be safe and respectful for everyone,” she said while appealing for strict action against the accused.
