Face covered with a mask, cap on his head, bag hanging from his shoulder – is how CCTV cameras have captured the suspect in the Bengaluru Rameshwaram cafe blast. Investigating authorities are using CCTV footage from several sources to trace the steps of the suspected bomber.

On the morning of Saturday, 2 March, a day after a low-intensity Improvised Explosive Device (IED) ripped through a popular cafe, NSG officers visited the spot. The Bengaluru police has registered an FIR under sections 120 B, 324, 307 of IPC, Section 3 and 4 of Explosive Substances Act and section 15 and 16 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act aka UAPA.

Tracking footsteps of the suspect

The investigating officials have started collecting CCTV footage not just from the cafe or nearby businesses but also from traffic cameras. The investigation has, so far, led the police to retrace the suspect’s footsteps to a bus which he de-boarded before walking into Rameshwaram Cafe in Brookefield.

Footage from several CCTVs shows the suspect’s activities, the clothes he was wearing, the items he was carrying and where he went to right after placing the bag with an IED inside the cafe.

Footage shows the suspect wearing glasses, a mask covering his face, a cap and carrying a bag into the hotel. CCTV from inside the hotel captures him walking up to the counter, ordering food, going to the service station to pick up his food, settling down at a table and leaving the bag he had carried behind.

An hour after he had left the premises, the IED went off injuring at least 10 people.

Officers have also acquired CCTV footage from BMTC to trace the suspect’s movement further.

“One man, wearing a mask and a cap, travelled in a bus. He ordered food and sat down inside the cafe.. He has set off the timer before leaving. His photos have emerged and it will be easy to track him down. We do not know what the motive was or if this was a single-man operation or by a group,” said Siddaramaiah, Chief Minister of Karnataka on Saturday when asked about the nature of the crime.

Meanwhile, as media reports suggested that there were similarities between the Rameshwaram Cafe blast and Mangaluru cooker blast case, Bengaluru police commission B Dayanand appealed to not indulge in speculation
