Following the death of a 22-year-old kabaddi player from rabies in Uttar Pradesh, BBMP has intensified its rabies control efforts. The civic body has launched a vaccination and awareness drive, rounding up suspected rabid dogs—673 of 1,107 strays tested positive over 4.5 years.
‘Ring vaccination’ is carried out in areas where rabid dogs are found. BBMP has vaccinated over 4.4 lakh dogs and sterilised over 2.3 lakh under its Animal Birth Control programme. Special vehicles will now visit wards to spread awareness, particularly among school and college students. An oral rabies vaccine is also under development.
