In a bid to protect Bengaluru’s lakes from sewage contamination, BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has instructed the BWSSB to take immediate measures to stop the inflow of untreated sewage. During a review meeting, he stressed the need to identify lakes receiving sewage and build diversion lines to reroute it.
Rao also called for immediate repairs to walking paths damaged by sewage discharge and urged action against individuals illegally releasing sewage into stormwater drains. Highlighting the issue of garbage entering lakes through drains, he directed the stormwater division to implement preventive steps.
He emphasised the urgency of completing Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to allow treated water to be released into lakes, reducing pollution.
Additionally, the SWD Chief Engineer has been ordered to survey missing outlet drains for lakes within 15 days and consider installing trash barriers to block floating debris. A coordinated action plan and timeline involving BBMP and BWSSB will be developed.
