Bengaluru police arrest Atul Subhash's wife, her mother and brother.

The Bengaluru police arrested the wife and in-laws of Atul Subhash, a techie from Uttar Pradesh who allegedly died by suicide in Bengaluru on 9 December, said police sources on Sunday, 15 December.

His wife Nikita Singania was arrested from Gurugram in Haryana while her mother Nisha Singhania and brother Anurag Singhania from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. According to police sources, they were brought to Bengaluru and a court has remanded them to judicial custody.

In the initial FIR, the police booked the accused under sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 3(5) (criminal act with a common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). They have also been accused of demanding ₹3 crore to withdraw cases against Subhash and ₹30 lakh for visitation rights to see his son.

A 34-year-old software engineer from Uttar Pradesh was found dead in his flat in Bengaluru’s Marathahalli area.

In a 24-page suicide note and an hour-long video, the deceased, Atul Subhash, blamed harassment by his estranged wife, her family, and a “corrupt” judiciary in Uttar Pradesh for his death.

The suicide note named his wife Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha Singhania, brother Anurag Singhania, and a few others for pushing him to take the extreme step. He also accused a judge and a few court staff in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, of accepting bribes to target him.

Case registered

The Whitefield police received a distress call via the 112 helpline on 9 December. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Subhash hanging in his locked apartment with a placard reading “Justice is due” attached to his body.

DCP Whitefield Shivakumar confirmed the incident and stated that the police had registered a case. “It was a family issue between the husband and wife, with a case ongoing in Uttar Pradesh. He left a detailed note and video before ending his life,” the officer said.

The deceased man’s brother has filed a formal complaint against the individuals named in the note, prompting the police to initiate an investigation. The postmortem was conducted on Tuesday, but the authorities have not yet questioned Subhash’s wife or her family.

Subhash was reportedly embroiled in multiple legal cases filed by his wife, including a domestic violence case in Uttar Pradesh.
