Synopsis: In a major show of dissent, Muslim Congress leaders in Dakshina Kannada — from booth workers to state-level functionaries — collectively resigned on 29 May, alleging government inaction over rising communal killings. At an emergency meeting in Mangaluru, district vice president K Ashraf blamed the Home Minister and local officials for failing to curb hate crimes and ensure law and order
The Congress leaders from the Muslim community in Dakshina Kannada holding various positions from the booth level workers to district and state office bearers announced their collective resignations at an emergency meeting held at Bolara in Mangaluru on Thursday, 29 May.
Congress workers alleged that the state government and Home Ministry has failed to stop the killings in Dakshina Kannada. K Ashraf, Dakshina Kannada district, Congress Vice President, said, “Law and order has gone for toss in Dakshina Kannada. It is a failure of Home Minister G Parameshwar and district in charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao. Last time, when similar incidents had happened , the Home Minister had assured that strict action would be taken against the accused and people who make hate speeches. While the police file FIRs against people who make hate speeches, later they are et to roam around freely. They don’t even keep track of these people. Because of this, innocent lives are killed.”
He continued, “As of today, over 200 office bearers and workers of Congress party have resigned.”
These resignations have come after the killing of Abdul Rahman. His associate Shafi was injured and admitted to hospital. The police have booked 14 people in this case. Rahman was killed weeks after the murder of rowdy sheeter, Suhas Shetty in Mangaluru.
