Foiled robbery attempt at jewelry shop in Bengaluru ends up in shootout injuring two men

A failed robbery attempt in a jewellery store in Bengaluru on Wednesday, 14 March, resulted in a shooting incident that injured two people.

The armed robbers shot at two people in broad daylight in the Kodigehalli area in Northeast Bengaluru.

The robbery attempt unfolded at Laxmi Bankers and Jewellers in Lottagolla Halli in the Devinagar area.

It led to the injury of Appu Ram and Anant Ram, one of them being the owner of the store and the other an employee.

According to the police, they had put up a brave fight with the armed intruders, which resulted in one person getting shot in his stomach while the other was shot in the leg.

“Both victims have been shifted to hospital for treatment and are said to be out of danger,” Commissioner of Police B Dayananda, who visited the crime scene, told reporters.

The police are also probing whether the assailants were hired by someone to perform the crime.

The robbery attempt

The police said that the incident occurred between 11 am and 11.15 am when four armed men came on two motorcycles to the jewellery store in Devinagar.

While two of them kept guard on their bikes outside the store, the other two — who were riding pillion — barged into the store and brandished their guns, asking the store employees to give them all the gold ornaments that were on display.

The two were wearing helmets to conceal their identities, the police said.

Two to three employees at the jewellery store, including the owner, reportedly resisted the robbers. When the employees fought, the robbers threatened to shoot them down. The two assailants then fired three rounds at them.

Following the gunshots, the assailants quickly fled the spot without any jewellery. It was a foiled attempt, but led to injuries to two people, a senior police officer told South First.

One of the assailants abandoned a pistol and a machete at the crime scene while fleeing the spot.

Whole incident captured on camera

The entire incident unfolded within a minute and was captured on CCTV cameras both inside and outside the store as well as the ones installed in the neighbourhood.

Hearing the gunshots, people gathered near the shop and some of them captured visuals of the miscreants escaping the scene of the crime using their mobile phones.

The police reached the spot swiftly and shifted the injured victims to the hospital.

Director General & Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP) Alok Mohan and City Police Commissioner B Dayananda along with his subordinate Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Northeast Police Division Laxmi Prasad visited the spot and took stock of the situation.

Fingerprint experts and the dog squad examined the scene of the crime.

“Some four persons have come and tried to rob. When the shop owner and employees resisted, two to three rounds were fired by them (assailants). Two people were injured, and they have been shifted to hospital. All efforts are being made to nab the culprits,” B Dayananda told reporters.

CCTV footage in and around the jewellery store is being scanned to identify the assailants and ascertain the sequence of events, the Kodigehalli police said, adding that further investigations are underway.
