Another setback for Karnataka BJP: Haveri MLA, 2 sons sentenced to 2 years in jail for corruption

In yet another embarrassment to the BJP in Karnataka, Haveri MLA Nehru Olekar and his two sons were on Monday, 13 February. convicted on charges of corruption and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by the Special Court for Elected Representatives in Bengaluru.

Shashidhar Hallikeri, a resident of Haveri, had filed a complaint against the BJP MLA and his sons in a private court around 2011.

He accused Haveri MLA of misusing his position in obtaining government contracts for projects worth ₹50 lakh for his sons in Haveri City.

He also obtained false work-done certificates from the local administrative body, said the complainant.

The case was referred to the Karnataka Lokayukta. It registered a complaint against Olekar and filed a chargesheet against him and his sons.

Based on the report submitted by the Karnataka Lokayukta, special court judge B Jayanth Kumar found the MLA and his sons Manjunath and Devaraj guilty.

The court pronounced a two-year jail term for all three of them.

An advocate told South First: “As the jail term is less than three years, the court is likely to provide bail to all the accused in the case.”

Jolts for the BJP

South First has already reported that BJP MLA M P Kumaraswamy was convicted in a cheque bounce case by the special court.

The court has sentenced him to a jail term of six months each in eight cheque-bounce cases.

Kumaraswamy thus has to spend four years in jail if he fails to pay back the money in a stipulated time frame.

Huvappagowda, the complainant and a friend of the Mudigere MLA, had filed a complaint against Kumaraswamy.

Kumaraswamy had given eight cheques to Huvappagowda as repayment for the money he had borrowed, but all the cheques bounced.
