After Anthropic, Open AI has announced that it plans to open an office in Bengaluru later this year.
The move was announced as part of the OpenAI for India initiative that was launched at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi.
“To better serve users and partners in India, OpenAI also plans to open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru later this year, alongside its existing presence in New Delhi,” a blog post on its website said.
Reacting to the development, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI said, “India is already leading the way in AI adoption, and with its homegrown tech talent, optimism about what AI can do for the country, and strong government support, it is well placed to help shape its future and how democratic AI is adopted at scale.”
He further said that through OpenAI for India, they are working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to “build AI with India, for India, and in India.”
The company also announced a strategic partnership with the Tata Group. “As part of our global Stargate initiative, OpenAI and Tata Group are partnering to develop local, AI-ready data center capacity designed for data residency, security, and long-term domestic capability. OpenAI will become the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ HyperVault data center business, beginning with 100 megawatts of capacity and with potential to scale to 1 gigawatt over time,” the blog post read.
OpenAI is also expanding its certifications in India, with “TCS becoming the first participating organization outside the United States. These certifications are designed to help professionals build practical AI skills that apply across roles and industries.”
They are also partnering with leading institutions, providing more than 100,000 ChatGPT Edu licenses to help prepare students with workforce-relevant skills.
The institutions are IIM Ahmedabad, AIMS, New Delhi, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, and Pearl Academy.
US-based AI giant Anthropic has officially opened its first India office – in Bengaluru – marking the Karnataka capital as second expansion in Asia after Tokyo.
Led by its India Managing Director Irina Ghose, the Bengaluru office will prioritise hiring local talent across diverse roles. This strategic push comes as India’s run-rate revenue for Anthropic has doubled since October 2025, driven by intense technical usage.
