Telangana Medical Colleges

The Telangana government on Monday, 3 October, announced that around 1,200 additional MBBS seats would be available for admission from this academic year, as eight new medical colleges in the state have obtained permission for this purpose.

The notification for admission to these medical colleges will come in a couple of days.

“This is the first time in the history of the country that 1,200 seats are available in one academic year,” Health Minister T Harish Rao told reporters on Monday.

Rao said the government sanctioned 12 medical colleges in Mahbubnagar, Siddipet, Suryapet, Nalgonda, Sangareddy, Mahbubabad, Mancherial, Wanaparthy, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Jagtial, Nagarkurnool, and Ramagundam after the formation of the state.

Of these, medical colleges at Mahbubnagar, Siddipet, Suryapet, and Nalgonda are already functioning.

Admissions to the Sangareddy, Mahbubabad, Mancherial, Wanaparthy, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Jagtial, Nagarkurnool, and Ramagundam medical colleges would start from the 2022-23 academic year, he said.

“Three colleges were established in 70 years of united Andhra Pradesh. We were able to get 12 new colleges in seven years. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao sanctioned ₹4,080 crore for these eight new colleges,” said Rao.

The health minister added that while there were 850 MBBS seats in government medical colleges when the state was formed, it increased to 2,902 seats in this academic year.

There are 6,540 MBBS seats available in government and private medical colleges in the state this academic year, he said, adding that there were only 2,600 MBBS seats in 2014.

“There is no need for Telangana students to go to countries like Ukraine, China, or the Philippines for medical education. It was due to the situation created in the state during the united Andhra Pradesh days,” he said.

“The chief minister decided to have medical colleges in every district. Accordingly, 33 medical colleges will be established. The other medical colleges will start in phases,” added the minister.

“Also, action has been taken to implement 85 percent local reservations in B category medical seats as well. Due to this, more Telangana students can study here. Due to this decision, 1,067 seats will be allotted to Telangana students,” said Rao.

‘Not a single college sanctioned to Telangana’

Attacking the BJP government at the Centre, Rao said that while it sanctioned 157 medical colleges in the country, not a single college was sanctioned in Telangana.

He said the Central government claimed no proposal for this was received from Telangana, but the state “disclosed the letters” it had written in this regard.

“We decided to set up medical colleges in the districts with our own money as the Centre did not give medical colleges to the state,” said Rao.

Recently, Union Minister of Culture and BJP leader G Kishan Reddy said that nine medical colleges had been set up in Telangana with the help of the Central government.

Replying to Reddy, Rao said asked for proof. He said it was “perverse politics” to say that the Centre had given colleges when it hadn’t.

“One Centrally sponsored AIIMS came to state, but there is no operation theatre. No oxygen. Not a single operation is taking place. The students are doing practicals in Bhuvanagiri hospital,” claimed Rao.
