The first case of suspected Monkeypox in Telangana was reported on Sunday, 24 July.
A 40-year-old man from Indiranagar Colony in the Kamareddy district showed symptoms of Monkeypox, and was reportedly being shifted to Fever Hospital in Hyderabad.
According to Dr G Srinivisa Rao, Director of Public Health for Telangana, the person arrived from Kuwait on 6 July.
“He developed a fever on 20 July and rashes on Saturday,” said Rao.
“On Sunday morning, he went to a private hospital in Kamareddy. The doctor there diagnosed the symptoms of Monkeypox and referred him to the Kamareddy District Hospital. From there, we shifted him to Fever Hospital,” he added.
His blood samples have been collected and sent to the National Institute of Virology Lab in Pune.
“Until [his report comes], we will keep him in isolation in Fever hospital and provide treatment,” said Rao.
“We have identified six people who had direct contact with this person. None of them has any symptoms. However, we have isolated them,” he added.
Dr Rao also said people need not worry about monkeypox because it is not a fatal disease.
Kerala has so far reported three confirmed cases of monkeypox — also the first three in India.
The country’s fourth case was reported from Delhi earlier in the day on Sunday.
