Hot on the heels of a medical doctor in Chitradurga district being relieved of his duties due to a viral video capturing his pre-wedding shoot within the operation theatre at Bharamasagara taluk hospital, another video has surfaced.
This time, groups of medical students from Gadag Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) are seen dancing exuberantly to the beats of Sandalwood, Kollywood, and Bollywood songs within the hospital premises.
These video have ignited a fervent discussion on the expected professionalism and decorum within medical institutions. The medicos featured in the videos, engaging in reels, acting, and dancing to the tunes of a popular Kannada song from the movie Premaloka and a Hindi song from the Bollywood movie Mohra, have been suspended for 10 days.

Dr Basavaraj Bommanahalli, Director of GIMS, revealed to the media that he learnt about the incident on Friday, 9 February. He acknowledged the involvement of more than 38 medical students, many of whom have completed their MBBS course and are presently undertaking their house surgeon course at the hospital.
“The group also includes 15 house surgeons, set to graduate in the next few months. We conducted an inquiry and found that they created this reel as part of their pre-graduation celebrations. We have suspended them for 10 days, resulting in a delay in their postings by the same duration. Appropriate action will be taken against all others involved in the incident,” he affirmed to South First.
The Director clarified that the students, after spending five years with GIMS, recorded the video as part of their last day at the institution. However, no permissions for such celebrations were sought from the hospital authorities.
These incidents have drawn widespread criticism from both the public and the medical community, prompting questions about the ethical standards and professional conduct of those implicated.
While the operation theatre, typically a sanctuary for life-saving procedures, was utilised as a backdrop for personal celebration in one instance, the sanctity of the hospital environment was compromised in the other by the joyous exhibition of dance moves, more fitting for a different setting.
Authorities at both institutions have responded to these incidents with concern, underlining the importance of upholding professionalism and respect within hospital premises.
“These actions not only disrespect the sanctity of the hospital environment but also have the potential to compromise patient safety,” expressed a senior health official to South First.
