The Ramaiah Memorial Hospital  (RMH) on Friday, 12 July, in Bengaluru signed a long-term collaboration agreement with the Mount Sinai Health System in New York to enhance speciality care development and quality technological advancements.

This partnership also aims to enhance healthcare services through clinical excellence, quality of care, research, innovation, and technology.

Dr David L Reich, president of the Mount Sinai Hospitals and Mount Sinai Queens, who signed the agreement at the RMH said, the goal of using AI is to bring the right team to the right patient at the right time.

The collaboration focuses on advancing RMH’s clinical competencies and centres of excellence in Oncology, Cardiology, Neurosciences, Urology-Nephrology, and other specialities.

It includes periodic reviews of RMH’s complex clinical cases by experts from both institutions to identify the best treatment options for patients.

Locally derived algorithms

Dr Reich speaking of the importance of Artificial Intelligence, said, they would in fact focus on the concept of the other AI— Augmented Intelligence, as the word “Artificial Intelligence”  itself scares people.

Augmented intelligence is a subsection of AI machine learning developed to enhance human intelligence rather than operate independently of or outright replace it.

He added, “We develop algorithms to help doctors and nurses be more effective in their care.”

Citing an example about doctors and nurses using their skills more effectively, he said they would want a radiologist who uses AI to diagnose patients via mammography or chest CT scans, aiming to handle 200 scans daily. In this case, he adds, AI would assist in making presumptive diagnoses, which doctors would then confirm.

He added that they are hoping to bring to RMH the systems developed in New York. “A lot of what we have built as platforms will be things we can easily bring to Ramaiah and they can gain from our know-how. The know-how we have will enable us to develop locally derived algorithms that will work for this local population,” he said.

International standards of healthcare

Dr MR Jayaram, chairman of Gokula Education Foundation speaking to the media said this collaboration with Mount Sinai in New York, “Will advance clinical excellence, enhance patient care, safety, and quality, further medical innovation and technology, and take the standard of the overall healthcare offerings to the next level.”

Dr Szabi Dorotovics, president of Mount Sinai International said that Mount Sinai and the Ramaiah Memorial Hospital have now forged a long-term collaboration and partnership adding, “ Together, we seek to provide the citizens of Bengaluru, and the State of Karnataka, with the highest international standards of healthcare to enhance their wellness, and thereby, their prosperity.”
