Kerala sees 2 more Covid-19 death as 565 fresh cases reported

With 565 fresh cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the number of active cases in the state has gone up 2,872.

Kerala reported two more deaths due to Covid-19 and 565 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, according to data on the Union Health Ministry website on Sunday, 24 December.

The number of active cases in the state has gone up to 2,872. With two more deaths reported in the state, the total number of people who have died due to Covid-19 in Kerala since its outbreak three years ago reached 72,062.

The number of people who were cured, discharged, or migrated in the last 24 hours after being diagnosed with the infection stood at 297.

With that, the total number of cases under this category rose to 68,37,,986 till date.

Telangana

Telangana on Saturday logged 12 new Covid-19 cases with Hyderabad reporting the highest number of infections at nine, a health department bulletin said.

The remaining three cases were reported from Rangareddy, Sangareddy and Warangal districts. No fresh fatalities were reported in the state, it said.

The total number of cases under treatment or isolation stands at 38, according to the bulletin.

A total of 1,322 samples were tested on Saturday and reports of 30 of these are awaited. On Friday, Telangana reported nine Covid-19 cases.

The case fatality rate in Telangana stands at 0.49 percent and the recovery rate at 99.51 percent, the bulletin said.

Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha held a high-level meeting here on Saturday to review Covid-19 preparedness.

He directed health department officials to examine the performance of ventilators in various hospitals and arrange oxygen concentrators required for the treatment of Covid-19 patients.

The minister also asked the officials to re-operationalise Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) oxygen plants that are currently not in use in various hospitals.

Narasimha told the officials to acquire necessary machines, drugs and diagnostic equipment for the corona wards of various hospitals.

RT-PCR labs have been set up in 34 government hospitals and 84 private hospitals across the state, he said.

The officials told the minister that the RT-PCR labs have a daily testing capacity of 16,500 samples.

They informed the minister that 6,344 samples have been collected in the last two weeks from wards set up in various hospitals and their test results are awaited,

Meanwhile, Karnataka has reported 78 cases and one death, Tamil Nadu has reported 22 fresh cases and Andhra Pradesh has reported eight new cases.

Cases in the country

India saw a single-day rise of 752 coronavirus infections, the highest since May 21, 2023, while the active cases have increased to 3,420, according to Union health ministry data updated on Sunday.

The death toll was recorded at 5,33,332 with four new deaths — two from Kerala, one each in Rajasthan and Karnataka — reported in a span of 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am stated.

The country’s Covid-19 case tally stood at 4.50 crore (4,50,07,964). The number of people who recuperated from the disease has increased to 4,44,71,212, and the national recovery rate stands at 98.81 percent, according to the health ministry’s website. The fatality rate stands at 1.19 percent.

The ministry’s website stated that 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far.
