Five in ICU as Kerala monitors Nipah contacts; 12 under treatment in Malappuram, 4 in isolation in Palakkad

Two fresh cases of Nipah infection were confirmed on Friday, 4 July. Health workers have visited 2,185 households to gather information.

Suspected nipah virus case reported in Palakkad; samples sent for confirmation

Synopsis: Five people are in intensive care after contact with confirmed Nipah virus cases, while 12 are under treatment in Malappuram and four are in isolation in Palakkad. Two new infections were confirmed on 4 July: a 38-year-old woman in Palakkad and an 18-year-old woman in Malappuram who died on 1 July. A total of 383 contacts are under surveillance across four districts, and containment measures remain in force in affected areas.

Five people who recently came into contact with individuals infected with the Nipah virus are being treated in intensive care units, according to the Kerala Health Department.

Twelve people are under treatment in Malappuram, while four are in isolation in Palakkad.

Two fresh cases of Nipah infection were confirmed on Friday, 4 July.

The first is a 38-year-old woman from Thachanattukara Grama Panchayat in Palakkad. Her test results were confirmed by the National Institute of Virology, Pune, on Friday morning.

The second case is from Malappuram, involving an 18-year-old girl who developed fever and headache on 23 June. Her family administered a home remedy on 24 June and took her to hospital only on 25 June. She died on 1 July and was cremated the next day at Makkaraparamby Juma Masjid.

At present, 383 people are on the state’s Nipah contact list. This includes:

  • 241 in Malappuram
  • 142 in Palakkad
  • 94 in Kozhikode
  • 2 in Ernakulam

In Palakkad, three individuals from the confirmed case’s primary contact list are now classified as probable cases. A total of 173 people are under observation in the district.

Health workers have visited 2,185 households to gather information. The District Mental Health Department has provided counselling by phone to 165 people. The 24-hour control cell at Palakkad Government Medical College has received 21 calls from the public.

Additional ICU and isolation facilities have been arranged in anticipation of a possible rise in patient numbers.

Containment zones and restrictions

There is no change in the containment zones. Restrictions remain in place in the following wards:

Thachanattukara Panchayat:

  • Ward 7 (Kundoorkunnu)
  • Ward 8 (Palode)
  • Ward 9 (Parammal)
  • Ward 11 (Chamaparamba)

Karimpuzha Panchayat:

  • Ward 17 (Attassery)
  • Ward 18 (Cholakurissi)

Residents in these areas have been advised not to gather unnecessarily. Wearing N95 masks is mandatory. Travel outside containment zones should be avoided. Those in isolation or quarantine must wear N95 masks and strictly follow quarantine guidelines.

People with symptoms such as fever, cough, headache, shortness of breath, mental confusion, or fainting are urged to contact the nearest health worker or call the control room at 0491–2504002.
