Covid-19 update: India sees highest number of cases in 7 months; Kerala, TN, Puducherry report deaths

India has logged 797 new cases of Covid-19, the highest in 225 days, while the number of active cases of the infection have been recorded at 4,091.

India has logged 797 new cases of Covid-19, the highest in 225 days, while the number of active cases of the infection has been recorded at 4,091, according to data on the Union Health Ministry website (as of 8 am on Friday, 29 December).

Five new fatalities due to Covid — two from Kerala and one each from Maharashtra, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu — have been reported in a span of 24 hours, the data stated.

The country had recorded 865 new cases on 19 May — the highest this year.

Covid-19 in South India

Kerala reported 379 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, according to data on the Union Health Ministry website as of 8 am on Friday, 29 December. The state has reported two new Covid-19 deaths.

The number of active cases in the state has decreased to 2,522 as significantly, 654 people recovered from the infection. The total number of people who have died due to Covid-19 in Kerala since its outbreak three years ago reached 72,067.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have reported a death each in the last 24 hours. Tamil Nadu has also reported 23 new cases, Karnataka has reported 158 new cases, Andhra Pradesh has reported 25 new cases, and Telangana has reported nine cases. Puducherry has reported a single new case.

Overall Covid-19 numbers

The number of daily cases had dropped to double-digits till 5 December, but the cases have risen again after emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions.

The daily numbers were in lakhs during the peak of the pandemic, which began in early 2020 and has seen more than 4.5 crore people getting infected and over 5.3 lakh deaths in three years.

The number of people who have recuperated from the infection stands at over 4.4 crore, with a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent, according to the Ministry’s website.

220.67 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered so far in the country.
