For the past 50 years, the Institute of Cardiology at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) has been treating thousands of patients with heart problems every day and is now preparing to offer even more advanced care.
Opened in 1972, it has steadily grown to become one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest heart treatment centres. Over the decades, the hospital has moved far beyond basic treatments and now handles complex procedures like coronary interventions and advanced surgeries.
The centre has a fully equipped cardiac catheter lab that operates round the clock, allowing critical heart procedures to be done without delay. With strong government backing and new infrastructure, the institute has expanded to handle a wide range of cardiac issues. The hospital now records about 17,000 outpatients every month and performs several interventional procedures, including device closures and balloon angioplasties.
A special 24-hour chest pain clinic functions within the hospital. In the past year alone, more than 4,700 patients were screened for heart attacks, and over 700 patients with serious heart attacks known as STEMI received timely treatment.
Specialists also carry out high-risk procedures like primary PCI to reopen blocked arteries and treat other emergencies.
The institute has also taken steps to focus on maternal heart care, which helps lower risks for pregnant women with heart conditions. It also serves as a centre for national-level research on heart disease and has trained many doctors who now work in different parts of the world.
A release from the institute read, “With continued support from the state government and the latest medical technology, RGGGH plans to strengthen its facilities further, offering advanced cardiac treatments while continuing its long-standing role of healing hearts for patients across Tamil Nadu.”
