Building on last year’s massive success with over 40,000 visitors, the second edition aims to surpass expectations and create unforgettable memories for attendees.

Benedict Savio, director of Global Media Box and festival organiser, shares his vision with South First.

“TNIKF is not your regular kite festival — it’s a fascinating display of art and culture from around the world. We want to create a unique experience for attendees by showcasing international talent and promoting environmental awareness,” he says.

Professional kite flyers will showcase their talents, crafting breathtaking displays. “I’ve attended several kite festivals across the globe. I am focused on bringing such an eclectic experience here. We also aim to create a dynamic club in Tamil Nadu and a learning space for students to experience how these designer inflatable kites are made,” Savio says.

The festival will run for four days, an additional day than last year, offering ample time for visitors to soak in the joy of a sky dotted with designer kites.

Environment takes centre stage

The festival’s theme “Wings of Waves: Save Marine Life, Save Mother Earth” resonates deeply with the organisers’ commitment to environmental conservation.

Showcasing aquatic animal-themed show kites, the event aims to inspire visitors to protect marine life and our planet. “While this is the theme, there are several surprises for the visitors. We want to keep them under wraps,” Savio reveals.

A 20-foot high inflatable set-up of Our Mother Earth, accompanied by hundreds of wind spinners and chimes, will serve as a visual marvel and a poignant reminder of the need to safeguard our environment.

Additionally, families can enjoy live music performances by Premgi and Band; singer Rakshita Suresh, “sing-along” band Motta Maadi Music, and DJ Black. Visitors can also indulge in delectable treats from food stalls and immerse themselves in the world of kites.

A curtain-raiser event will kickstart the festivities from 4 to 6 August at Triveni Sangamam and Chothavilai Beach, Kanyakumari.

“We closely monitor weather reports and make necessary arrangements accordingly. The windiest season here is during this time. We are hoping for favourable weather conditions for both events,” Savio explains.

Expanding experiences

Savio envisions expanding the festival to other districts in South India in the coming years.

However, finding sponsors who align with the festival’s vision has been a challenge. With meaningful engagement, the team is committed to create an enriching experience.

TNIKF serves as an important platform for environmental education and promoting Tamil Nadu’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and tourism.

“We’ve received incredible support from Sandeep Nanduri, Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) and the entire team. He has been welcoming of new ideas and supportive of them, without which this event isn’t possible. They have been proactive with engagement on all platforms, and this is an exciting time!” he enthuses.

As TNIKF gears up for its grand spectacle at TTDC Ocean View Mahabalipuram, the excitement is palpable. The festival promises a perfect blend of fun, art, and environmental consciousness.
