Ranga Shankara’s Kannada Natakotsava 2023 to showcase six plays at Sheshagiri

Showcasing six plays by emerging directors, Ranga Shankara‘s annual Kannada Natakotsava kicked off at Sheshagiri on Friday, 22, December.

Sheshagiri village is located in Hangal taluk of Haveri district in Karnataka. Located 360 km from Bengaluru, the village with a  population of 1500 members is renowned for its rich heritage in theatre and literature. Over the years, Sheshagiri has developed a deep passion for the arts. 

Sheshagiri has become a nurturing ground for art, fostering a community deeply passionate about the performing arts. The highly anticipated theatre festival began on Friday at the prestigious CM Udasi Kalakshetra in Sheshagiri. 

Upcoming shows include Adhe Adhure by Varna Collective (Mysore) on 24 December;  Naavu… by Bengaluru Theatre Ensemble (Bengaluru) on 25 December; Shavada Mane by Bahutva Pratishthana (Hospet) on 26, December and on Agnathanobbana Aatma Charitre by ActReact (Bengaluru) 27, December.

Nurturing art

The Kannada Natakotsava Festival is supported by the Kannada & Culture Department, Government of Karnataka, and Shri Gajanana Yuvaka Mandali, Sheshagiri. This edition of the festival extends beyond the stage, providing a profound experience for theatre practitioners in a dedicated residential workshop.

The workshop, designed by Surendranath S and executed by Sripad Bhat, will start with a morning class. It will offer valuable guidance from Surendranath S and Sripad Bhat.

A daily guest lecture, from 12 noon to 2 pm, will explore various aspects of theatre and performance arts. Senior theatre makers from Bengaluru, will provide a valuable opportunity for artistes at Sheshagiri.

Additionally, the workshop’s participants will have the opportunity to witness the festival plays at 8 pm. After which there will be discussions with the teams and directors at 9.30 pm.

The festival aims to be a melting pot of creativity, fostering collaboration and dialogue among theatre artistes, enthusiasts, and the audience. It provides a space for emerging directors to showcase their talent and offers an immersive experience for workshop attendees, ensuring a celebration of Kannada theatre.
