After two incredibly successful years in Chennai, Medai — The Stage, a black box performance space, prepares to sweep Bengaluru off its feet. The excitement is reaching fever pitch as the countdown to the grand launch on 22 July in Koramangala begins.

Understandably, Founder Charles B is brimming with excitement as he expresses his desire to bring Medai’s unique flavours to the multi-diverse city.

“Art thrives here and it’s a paradise for performers. I had my eyes on extending Medai to Bengaluru. I am glad everything is falling in place,” he shares with South First.

A haven for art seekers

Medai challenges the conventional notions of an art space and aims to bring together multiple art forms under one roof, creating a vibrant experience for art enthusiasts.

Strategically situated near the rustic Dyu Art Cafe in Koramangala, Medai promises to be a sanctuary for art seekers.

The location adds to the allure, allowing visitors to seamlessly transition between the vibrant atmosphere of the café and the enchanting world of artistic exploration at Medai.

What’s in store for Bengaluru?

The launch day will feature an array of performances to captivate the audience. First of, Dr Palaniappan (Pal) Manickam will kick off the evening with his rib-tickling Medcom (medical comedy) act. This will be followed by Badri Narayanan Seshadri’s “sing-along” band Motta Maadi Music.

On July 29, at 6.30 pm, a Carnatic concert featuring Sanjay Subrahmanyan and his team is set to enthral the audience.

On 30 July, stand-up comedians Abishek Kumar and Nirmal Pillai will both take stage with their interactive crowd work comedy show.

The excitement continues into August with performances by Odissi dancer Bijayini, comics Ramkumar, and comedian Daniel Fernandes. Bengaluru-based group Bhandutvas will be staging Dark People – Stories from the South.

“Many interesting collaborations are in the pipeline and we are eager to bring the best to the table!” enthuses Charles.

A stage for all

Underscoring the inclusive nature of Medai, Charles highlights their collaborations with the queer community.

All things considered, these collaborations aim to create shows that challenge societal norms. They provide a platform for marginalised voices to be heard and celebrated. “We are keen on creating both an interesting and inclusive experience for all,” he emphasises.

With a seating capacity of 200, this artist-driven space will showcase dancers, stand-up comedians, musicians, theatre groups and more. Expectedly, the 30×30 stage will boast of state-of-the-art technology and lighting. As a lighting designer himself basically, Charles insists on top-notch technology to enhance the visual spectacle.

Artistes and audiences can expect regular updates with a promise of a professional and unforgettable experience.

The black box space, akin to the concept in the United States, will undeniably place the spotlight solely on the artists. “The audience will have an elevated seating experience,” shares Charles.
