The FIFA World Cup is just two weeks away, and football fervour has caught up with people worldwide.

Kerala, known for its immense love of football, has already plunged deep into the celebrations to embrace the Qatar World Cup 2022, which will begin on 20 November.

Giant cutouts of favourite players like Messi, Cristiano and Neymar, are now a common sight in every nook and corner of the state.

Here, however, is a different story.

Ajay V John, an alumnus of Nirmala College Muvattupuzha, in Ernakulam district, took almost a year to complete his tribute to Argentine legend Lionel Messi

He showcased his 10.8-metre-long and nine-metre-wide drawing of Messi on the college’s basketball court on Tuesday, 1 November.

The drawing, which can be best viewed aerially, is drawn on 250 chart papers. To create this marvel, the artist drew around 1,18,800 squares in red, orange, yellow, black, and blue.

John took almost a year to complete this 1,046 sq. ft drawing. The drawing was later showcased in the college with the help of the management.

When asked about this achievement, Ajay told South First, “ I’ve been doing things like leaf art, drawings on eggshells, etc. During the pandemic, I felt like doing something different”.

“I’m a huge fan of Argentina and Leo Messi, so I felt I should do something as a tribute since the World Cup is almost here. It was then the idea of creating mosaic painting hit me.”

I started the preparations for this work in November-December 2021 and started drawing in January. The final pieces were completed last week.”

Ajay, who is now pursuing a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) course, also holds records in the India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records for drawing Mahatma Gandhi on eggshells.

The photographs and videos of Ajay’s Messi, first shared on the official page of the college, are now viral on social media.
