As ‘Naatu Naatu‘ won the Oscars on 12 March, Sunday (early Monday morning in India), celebrations began at the residence of singer Rahul Sipligunj in Hyderabad.
Sipligunj sang the original version along with Kaala Bhairava — son of his guru and music composer MM Keeravani.
At the Nizam Colony house in Banjara Hills, his parents and relatives were glued to the television from as early as 3 am on Monday, waiting for the 95th Oscars — officially known as Academy Awards — to start at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
“Even before leaving for the Oscars, he was confident about winning it. This was because the song had ‘Naatu Naatu’ won the Golden Globe Awards. He said that now we have won the Golden Globe, we will win the Oscars too,” an elated Sudha Rani, Rahul’s mother, told South First.
As soon as they heard the announcement, Sudha and Rahul’s father Rajkumar Sipligunj spoke to him at around 7 am. After that, they got busy giving interviews to media persons.
“He was very happy. He said this is the biggest achievement of his life and thanked us for giving him support. We also wished him luck in making the country and our family proud. It’s God’s blessing, ” Sudha said.
The whole family is now awaiting for their star kid to return and celebrate the achievement with him.
“His favourite food is biryani, whether mutton or chicken. So I will cook it for him,” Sudha said.
Meanwhile, Rajkumar told reporters that his forefathers also used to sing.
“He (Rahul) has also got the same genes. When he was a child he would sing sometimes and I took notice of it,” a smiling Rajkumar pointed out.
Meanwhile, Rahul Sipligunj and Bhairava sang ‘Naatu Naatu’ at the event, even as dancers from LA performed on stage.
Naatu Naatu’s lyricist Chandrabose’s wife Suchitra described him as a bookworm whose passion is reading books and acquiring knowledge.
“I am very happy that Chandrabose and (music director) Keeravani ji have won the Oscar award for India. I am just waiting for my husband to return (to celebrate). I will welcome him with a lot of flowers,” she told news agency PTI.
She added, “He always reads books, and writes something or the other. His passion is knowledge.
Chandrabose’s sister Swaroopa said the Oscars is officially called, is a matter of pride for India.
She recalled that her brother always used to gift something to his mother whenever he got an award.
However, she regretted that their mother is no more to experience the happiness of her son getting such a prestigious award.
