Director Bala, in a statement, said that Suriya was upset with the decision of removing him from the project Vanangaan. But the decision was taken as a big brother and after keeping the best interests of the younger brother’s career in view, he claimed.

“The changes to the role would not suit Suriya and so the movie Vanangaan will move forward without him.” This was the statement issued by Bala through his PR agency Done One Media.

Interestingly, the news was much expected in film circles. But the surprise element was that Bala announced it and not the production company – 2D Entertainment – which is owned by Suriya.

However, later in the night, 2D Entertainment reproduced Bala’s letter and said that “they were accepting the decision of the ‘elder brother’ with folded hands”.

The announcement came as only a confirmation of the many reports that came from the locations of the film about director Bala and Suriya’s clash.

Even at the recent function of a film’s trailer release, Bala laughed off the news of the rift as speculation saying: “It is between you (media) and me that the rift is happening.”

Reschedules and retakes

Bala is known to not keep to the schedule and is prone to mood swings. Several retakes, change in characters, and scrapping of shot portions are the mainstay of Bala’s film shooting.

Producers, technicians and actors who earlier worked with him spoke about these issues several times.

Pithamagan was the film that gave Suriya a lifetime role and also won him critical acclaim. When Suriya’s actor-wife Jyotika acted in Naachiyaar directed and produced by Bala, the talk was that Suriya and Bala would reunite.

Soon, on Suriya’s birthday, an announcement came that the Pithamagan team was coming together after 18 years.

Suriya, who has several projects in his kitty, reportedly told Bala about the need to stick to schedules. However, this did not take place and finally, an exasperated Suriya decided to pack up.

For Bala, this is the second time that his professional integrity is getting challenged. He was roped in to launch Vikram’s son Dhruv in the remake of the super-hit Telugu film Arjun Reddy.

However, Vikram and the producer jointly scrapped the project and had it reshot with another director. Incidentally, Vikram got National Award as the best actor for his role in Pithamagan.
