Come Onam and the film-buffs can’t wait to watch the biggest projects that are customarily lined up for grand release in theatres every year.

Perhaps, this is the first time that neither Mammootty nor Mohanlal is putting up a show for this festival. Still, there are a couple of interesting movies that film buffs can’t wait to watch.

Basil Joseph, Johny Antony’s Palthu Janwar

The first to release this Onam is Palthu Janwar, starring Basil Joseph, Johnny Antony, Indrans, and Dileesh Pothan. It is directed by debutant Sangeeth P Rajan. It attracted the audience’s attention since it is produced by Dileesh Pothan, Shyam Pushkar and Fahadh Faasil.

The trailer, released on 27 August, created quite a buzz on social media. The comedy-drama with animals playing characters is up for release on 2 September, six days before the festival.

What to expect: Basil Joseph is turning into a bankable actor in the industry. The trailer is promising and the movie has all the potential to be a silent killer at the box office.

Prithviraj-Alphonse Puthran’s Gold

Meanwhile, three Malayalam films are all set to enthral the audience for Thiruvonam on 8 September.

Gold is one of the most anticipated movies ever. Reason: Alphonse Puthran; his Premam shook the South Indian film industry in 2016 and became a blockbuster hit.

Even as the makers released two posters and a short teaser of Gold, the expectations are already running high for this Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara starrer.

Listin Stephen and Supriya Menon are the producers. Alphonse Puthran also handled scripting, editing, stunt choreography, visual effects, colour grading, and animation titles.

Premam-fame Rajesh Murugesan is the music composer. Gold has a huge star cast including Ajmal Ameer, Shabareesh Varma, Krishna Sankar, Chemban Vinod Jose, Vinay Forrt, Roshan Mathew, Saiju Kurup, Lalu Alex, Shammi Thilakan, Suresh Krishna and Deepti Sati. Wow.

Gold will be the biggest release for a Malayalam movie in Tamil Nadu. SSI Productions is releasing the Tamil version, while Truth Global Films is handling the overseas theatrical release. Amazon Prime is believed to have bought the digital rights for a record price.

What to expect: We don’t know much about the film, though its teaser reveals that it will be something in the line of “Neram”, a light-hearted comedy drama. It will be the pick among Onam releases for youngsters and also for a family audience. Expect a hurricane at the box office.

Vinayan, Siju Wilson’s Pathonpadham Noottandu

Director Vinayan is coming up with a big-budget film under Gokulam Gopalan’s production – Pathonpadham Noottandu.

The narrative, which takes place in 19th century Travancore, is based on the life of Ezhava fighter Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker who fought against societal injustice.

Siju Wilson is playing the central role of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker, while Kayadu Lohar will be seen as Nangel, Deepti Sati as Savithri Thampuratti, and Anoop Menon as the Maharaja of Travancore.

Santhosh Narayanan did the background score, and M Jayachandran composed the songs. As per the makers, the movie will be released in all South Indian languages.

What to expect: Pathonpadham Noottandu initially did not grab headlines, but the trailer and the song increased the expectations. It looks like a quality project from Vinayan, and the subject is worth all the attention.

Though the film will be released on the same date as Gold, the flicks aren’t competing with each other since their targeted audiences are different.

On the downside, it is really hard to attract and impress the viewers with a periodic subject, that too without a star cast. Well, that’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. Especially since the audiences are exposed to a big-budget periodic film like RRR.

Sreejith N, Biju Menon’s Oru Thekkan Thallu Case

Another film releasing on Onam is Oru Thekkan Thallu Case, directed by Sreejith N. This Biju Menon, Roshan Mathew and Nimisha Sajayan starrer is an adaptation of GR Indugopan’s book Amminipilla Vettu Case.

The script has been adapted by Rajesh Pinnadan. Manoj Kannoth is the editor, and Madhu Neelakandan is the cinematographer. Justin Varghese composed the soundtrack.

What to expect: Even though it is releasing along with two big films, Oru Thekkan Thallu Case has managed to create enough buzz to get noticed.

Now that the film’s trailer is quite impressive, let’s hope that it survives the Gold wave. On the downside, it does not look like a genre for the family audience. But the inside talk is very positive.

Shaji Natesan, Kunchacko Boban’s Ottu

Delays are still happening. Ottu, produced by Shaji Natesan and Tamil actor Arya under the banner of August Cinemas, was earlier planned for Onam. However, it has been postponed.

A gangster action thriller, Ottu will also be released in Tamil. It stars Kunchacko Boban and Arvind Swamy in lead roles. It is helmed by director Fellini, after his super hit Theevandi.

Though it is the least favourite among the Onam releases, Kunchacko Boban’s star value coupled with Arvind Swamy’s presence makes Ottu yet another notable September release. It is most likely to hit the screens on 16 September.

What to expect: The trailer promises action, thrills and a lot more. This is expected to be a good flick from the Theevandi director. On the downside, without a top star, action thrillers have no good takers in Malayalam.
