Watchlist: 5 major Tamil films releasing in August

This month, the Tamil film industry is all set to welcome a host of projects from star heroes in different genres.

This August, the Tamil film industry is all set to welcome a host of projects from star heroes, in different genres. Let’s take a quick look:

Poikkal Kuthirai

Actor-choreographer-director Prabhu Deva is seen playing a physically challenged person in Poikkal Kuthirai. It’s written and directed by Santhosh P. Jayakumar, and produced by S Vinod Kumar.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Raiza Wilson, Prakash Raj and Samuthirakani are playing key roles. D Imam is the music director. It is learnt that Prabhu Deva used a real prosthetic leg for his role (a uniped). The movie is releasing on 5 August.

Sita Ramam

This love story is a dubbed version of a Telugu film with the same name – Sita Ramam. It features Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles.

Telugu director Hanu Ragahavapudi is helming the project, while Aswini Dutt is the producer. Vishal Chandrasekhar is the music director.

The film has Dulquer playing lieutenant Ram and Mrunal his love interest. It is being released on 5 August (in Malayalam too).


Cobra is an action thriller starring Vikram, Srinidhi Shetty, Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan and Miya George in lead roles.

It is directed by R Ajay Gnanamuthu and produced by SS Lalit Kumar. AR Rahman composed the music.

It is learnt that Vikram will be seen in 20-25 different looks in this film. This marks the acting debut of Irfan, who is seen as an Interpol agent.

The theatrical release is scheduled for 11 August (in Telugu and Hindi as well).


Karthi’s Viruman is a mass masala film featuring debutante Aditi Shankar, Prakash Raj and Rajkiran in key roles.

It is directed by M Muthaiah and produced by Jyothika and Suriya under 2D Entertainment. Yuvan Shankar Raja is the music director.

The project was announced in September 2021 through a promotional poster and the entire shooting was completed by December-end. It is hitting the big screens on 12 August.


This Dhanush, Raashi Khanna, Nithya Menen, and Bharatiraja-starrer is a musical comedy-drama helmed by Mithran Jawahar.

Kalanithi Maran is producing it under the banner of Sun Pictures. Anirudh Ravichandran composed the music for Thiruchitrambalam, which is said to be based on the Hollywood musical La La Land.

Dhanush is playing the titular role in this movie, while Raashi is seen as his love interest and Nithya is his best friend-turned-wife. The film is releasing on 18 August.
