Veteran Tamil actor Junior Balaiah passes away

Junior Balaiah, whose original name was Raghu Balaiah, was the son of one of Tamil cinema's legendary comedians Balaiah.

Veteran actor Junior Balaiah — best known for having acted in a number of Tamil superhits including Karakattakaran (1989), Sundara Kandam (1992), Gopura Vasalile (1991) and Saattai (2012) — passed away early on Thursday, 2 November.

He was 70 years old.

Sources say that the veteran comedian experienced uneasiness and experienced breathing difficulty late on Wednesday night, 1 November. He eventually breathed his last at around 1.30 am on Thursday.

Junior Balaiah, whose original name was Raghu Balaiah, was the son of one of Tamil cinema’s legendary comedians Balaiah.

Having made his debut with the film Melnattu Marumagal in 1975, Junior Balaiah acted in many Tamil films and was constantly seen in a supporting role in almost all of director Baghyaraj’s films.

He also acted in a number of popular television serials, including Chithi, Vazhkai, and Chinna Paapa Periya Paapa.

Several celebrities from the film industry condoled the death of the veteran actor whose funeral will take place on Thursday evening.

One of the former office bearers of the Nadigar Sangam, Poochi Murugan, in his condolence message, said, “If actor Balaiah was a prime example of good acting, his son Junior Balaiah was a fine example of good friendship.”

He added, “He stood by me when we made efforts to recover the ancestral building of the Nadigar Sangam that had been donated to private entities. He even dared to oppose those close to him, saying that it was more important to be just and fair. I express my deepest condolences at his loss.”
