Veteran Malayalam producer Gandhimathi Balan passes away

Noted Malayalam film producer Gandhimathi Balan passed away on Wednesday, 10 April.

He was 66 years old and was undergoing treatment at KIMS Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram.

Balan produced and distributed more than 30 movies, including critically acclaimed films like Nombarathy Poovu, Ee Thanutha Veluppan Kaalathu, Irakal, Adaminte Variyellu, Panchavadi Palam, Moonam Pakkam, Thoovanathumbikal, and Malooty.

He served as the Kerala State Chalachithra Akademy vice-chairman and was known for his association with noted film director Padmanarajan.

However, after the death of Padmarajan, Gandhimathi Balan gradually stepped back from his active involvement in filmmaking.

Gahndhimathi Balan’s legacy lives on through the films he produced.

He bankrolled many films with Mohanlal and Mammootty in the lead.

He was active in the formation of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). He also organised stage shows for AMMA.

Gandhimathi was the name of Balan’s mother and was given to her by Mahatma Gandhi.

Besides films, Gandhimathi Balan was also part of literary and cultural events.

He was also involved in the real estate business.

He was the owner of the now-demolished Dhanya Remya theatre in Thiruvananthapuram.

He was based in Thiruvananthapuram for 40 years.
