Veteran Telugu actor Chandra Mohan passed away on Saturday, 11 November, following a brief illness in Hyderabad on Saturday. He was 82.
He was admitted to the Apollo Hospital recently following a heart-related ailment.
A report from the hospital said, “Chandra Mohan was brought to the ER and was unresponsive on arrival with no carotid pulse. He was resuscitated for 55 minutes but couldn’t attain ROSC. The ECG showed Aystole and hence he was declared dead at 9.57 am.”
Born into a lower-middle-class family in Pamidimukkala village in Krishna district on 23 May 1943, Chandra Mohan Mallampalli made his Telugu silver screen debut in 1966 with Rangula Ratnam. The film was a political satire starring Chandra Mohan, Vanisri, and Anjali Devi in the lead roles. He won the Nandi Award for Best Actor for the same.
He won the Best Actor (Telugu) at the Filmfare Awards South for Padaharella Vayasu (1978). He was paired up with Sridevi in this romantic drama, a remake of the Tamil superhit film 16 Vayathinile (1977).
He also won the Nandi Awards for Best Male Comedian for Chandamama Raave (1987) and Best Character Actor for Athanokkade (2005). H
Chandra Mohan debuted in Tamil with Naalai Nammadhe in 1975. He appeared in a handful of Tamil movies like Neeya (1979), Pathukappu (1993), Time (1999), and Saguni (2012).
His last silver screen appearance was in Oxygen (2017) starring Gopichand and Raashi Khanna.
A powerhouse actor he was, Chandra Mohan won a special place in the hearts of the Telugu audience with his roles, initially as a comedian and then as a lead actor. In the later years, he made a mark for himself as a character artiste.
Chandra Mohan is survived by his wife Jalandhara, and two daughters. His funeral will be held in Hyderabad on Monday, 13 November.
Following his sudden demise, celebrities across film industries in the South expressed deep shock.
Taking to his Twitter handle, Jr NTR wrote, “It is very sad to hear the news of Chandra Mohan Garu’s sudden demise. He earned a special name for himself by playing rich and versatile roles for several decades. My deepest condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”
