Roshan Kanakala

Roshan Kanakala, the scion of Kanakala’s family, is making his acting debut with Bubblegum. Manasa Chaudhary is playing his love interest in the film.

Jointly produced by Maheshwari Movies and People Media Factory, the movie is out in theatres on Friday, 29 December.

During an interaction with the media on Thursday, 28 December, Roshan Kanakala shared a few insights into his debut venture, his aspirations, and his grooming for the craft.

Excerpts from the interview:

As an actor

Q. What prompted you to become an actor? Was it the idea of your mother Suma Kanakala or your father Rajeev Kanakala?

A. It is mine (laughs). Becoming an actor has been my dream since my youth. There has always been a desire to make an impactful debut on the silver screen.

My dream materialised when I crossed paths with the director Ravikant Perepu, who harboured a vision to craft a film under this theme.

Q. Your grandfather late Devadas Kanakala moulded a raw-hue talent in the film industry. How did he inspire you as a tutor?

A. My entire childhood was spent almost in my grandfather’s acting institute. The institute would be on the ground floor of the building, and we lived on the first floor. Subconsciously, its impact was there on me.

Being surrounded by film enthusiasts since childhood, acting has become a natural phenomenon for me since I was a boy. It used to give me an unknown high.

Now, I am here chasing my dream. I will continue to act in films from now on.

Q. Have you taken any prior courses in acting before going on to the sets?

A. I remember taking lessons for over two months from my grandfather. I also did a film course in Los Angeles, USA.

Later, I did another course in Pondicherry. I would practice the craft with my father Rajeev Kanakala, whenever I got time.

Working on Bubblegum

Q. Was there a feeling of a newcomer when you set your foot on the film sets of Bubblegum?

A. Before going to the sets, director Ravikanth and I did a one-month workshop and rehearsed the scenes for the movie. I never had a feeling that I was a newcomer.

Q. Audiences heaped praise on you soon after the trailer launch. What was your feeling about this tremendous response on social media?

A. It was all pre-planned that we must go to the film sets soon after finishing the workshop. We thoroughly rehearsed the script — how to portray the right emotion for a particular scene, what costumes are needed, and how a scene can be emotionally elevated.

The preparation helped me nail the character in Bubblegum.

Q. You seem to have played the character of your age in Bubblegum. What kind of inputs have you given to the director Ravikanth?

A. Director Ravikanth is a new-age filmmaker who conceptualised the story with newcomers. The story is meant for my age-group men.

I discussed how this lad, who is just out of college, under this age group reacts to the situations when he encounters the outer world.

The director did his research before coming up with a final script.

Q. You are more or less nurtured by your parents, who have been in the film industry for a long time. Have you felt any pressure with the forthcoming prospects of Bubblegum?

A. Certainly, there was pressure for the debut film.

All that I had dreamt of in my life was films. I am happy that I am living my dream. I have complete faith in the content of Bubblegum.

Q. What advice have you taken from Megastar Chiranjeevi when you met him?

A. It was a great moment meeting Megastar Chiranjeevi garu during the song launch of “Izzat”. The story runs with the underlying theme of “give and take respect”.

Chiranjeevi garu shared his experiences with us. The same happened with Akkineni Nagarjuna sir. Their experiences and struggles they had in life are an inspiration for any young actor like me.

Q. Have you taken any suggestions from your mom or dad?

A. I always take suggestions from them in terms of the craft. I won’t hesitate to ask doubts anytime I need.

During the premiere of Bubblegum, I learned that my dad came out with teary eyes. He usually doesn’t compliment unless he likes it so much. But I was surprised when he said, “You did a great job!”

My mom Suma, too, liked it so much.
