Senior hero Nagarjuna has served up an action flick, The Ghost, on the occasion of Dasara. Director Praveen Sattaru, who took slick action up a few notches with PSV Garuda Vega, has again chosen the action genre — and has placed vintage Nagarjuna in the milieu. Has this hero-director duo impressed? Read on.

Why is he The Ghost?

Vikram (Nagarjuna Akkineni) and Priya (Sonal Chauhan) are Interpol officers known for their ruthless handling of criminals. Especially Vikram, a no-nonsense guy who doesn’t think even a second before eliminating the baddies, is so feared by dreaded criminals that the underworld has named him “The Ghost”.

There is something in his past that haunts Vikram and makes him so ruthless with criminals. His anger aggravates when the victims involved are children and women.

And things only get more dangerous and personal when Vikram’s sister Anupama Nair (Gul Panag) and his niece Aditi (Anikha Surendran) get embroiled with gangsters.

Why Anupama and Aditi’s lives are in danger and whether Vikram will succeed in saving them lies at the soul of The Ghost.

Action and emotion

The Ghost story has both action and emotional elements. With corporate deals and boardroom politics adding to the action, and family elements bringing in the emotion, the movie has enough substance to keep the audience engaged.

But Praveen Sattaru has banked heavily on action, neglecting the other interesting aspects. More focus on emotions, family sentiments and relationships — given its large cast of characters — would have made The Ghost better.

Despite this drawback, barring a few moments in the second half, most of the movie is gripping.

Casting turns heads

What is most noticeable about The Ghost is its impressive casting. This is definitely a new genre for Nagarjuna, who has mostly been associated with romantic comedies and family entertainers.

He has not tried this intense an action flick even during the heydays of his career. His fans will love him in this role.

Sonal Chauhan has a meaty role as an Interpol officer and Nag’s partner, and holds her own.

Gul Panag is impressive as a single mom struggling hard to protect her child, a large corporate conglomerate, and the family’s reputation.

And Anikha Surendran is a revelation. This one-time child actor has grown into a chirpy and lively young girl. Manish Chaudhari, Ravi Varma, Srikant Iyengar, Jayaprakash and others have played significant roles.

Action choreography stands out

Being an intense action movie, The Ghost has numerous action sequences. Action choreographers Kecha Khamphakdee and Dinesh Subbarayan have done an impressive job.

Cinematographer Mukesh has shot the movie in the stylish way required of the genre. And editor Dharamendra Kakarala has done a neat job, but could have made the second half even more compact — that’s where the momentum drops a bit.

Mark K Robins’ music could have been better.

Final take

Overall, The Ghost is an intense action flick which is slick in its presentation. Action movie lovers and Nagarjuna’s fans can certainly watch it once.
