Netflix to release documentary on Tollywood’s hit machine, SS Rajamouli

'Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli' will hit Netflix on 2 August. (X)

Netflix, Applause Entertainment, and Film Companion Studios are teaming up for a biographical documentary titled Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli.

Featuring an interview with Rajamouli, behind-the-scenes footage, and compelling narratives, this collaboration aims to capture the filmmaker’s creative world, highlighting his impact on Indian and international cinema and his innovative contributions to filmmaking.

The documentary film will drop on the OTT giant on 2 August. Presented by Anupama Chopra, the documentary includes insights from global luminaries like James Cameron, Joe Russo, and Karan Johar, along with friends and colleagues such as Prabhas, Jr NTR, Rana Daggubati, and Ram Charan.

Directed by Raghav Khanna and co-directed by Tanvi Ajinkya, the makers stated, “Rajamouli is lauded as a master storyteller, perfectionist, and international sensation. What drives his remarkable success? This docu-film reveals untold stories and perspectives from his family and collaborators.”

Monika Shergill, Vice-President of Content at Netflix India, says, “SS Rajamouli is an icon whose visionary storytelling and cinematic brilliance have cultivated a deep fandom and elevated Indian cinema globally. Modern Masters SS Rajamouli is part of Netflix’s 2024 documentary slate from India.

 Sameer Nair, Managing Director of Applause Entertainment, expresses excitement about partnering with Netflix and Film Companion Studios on the documentary. “Rajamouli’s inventive narrative style has revolutionised Indian filmmaking. We are eager to showcase his artistic journey from humble beginnings to Baahubali (2015, 2017) and RRR (2022).”

SS Rajamouli recently made a cameo appearance in Nag Ashwin’s Kalki 2898 AD, a mythological sci-fi drama starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan.

At the 96th Academy Awards in 2023, RRR made history as Rajamouli’s epic film received special recognition at the Dolby Theatre in California. The song “Naatu Naatu” also won India’s first-ever trophy in the Best Original Song category.

In addition to the Baahubali franchise and RRR, Rajamouli has helmed successful films such as Yamadonga (2007), Magadheera (2009), and Eega (2012). His upcoming project will be an untitled film starring Mahesh Babu in the lead role.
