Nag Ashwin on Kalki 2898 AD sequel

Filmmaker Nag Ashwin, basking in the success of his latest film Kalki 2898 AD, has provided updates on its sequel.

In the latest interview, the director mentioned that while they have already filmed a portion of the (Kalki 2898 AD) sequel, a significant part of production remains. He also teased an upcoming face-off between the three main characters in part two.

“We’ve completed around 25 or 30 days of shooting, but there’s still a significant amount of action left. It’s almost like beginning a whole new production,” he added.

Regarding the sequel’s plot, Nag Ashwin emphasised, “We must resolve every loose end or unanswered question. The main conflict will revolve around the showdown among these three; Yaskin, now able to wield the Gandiva (considered the most powerful weapon), facing off against Karna and Ashwatthama, both known for their formidable prowess.”

Further, the filmmaker admitted that they initially lacked a clear goal. “The complexity of the project became evident only as they immersed themselves in it, aiming for realism in their production values, and successfully executing intricate action sequences.”

Regarding Karna and Ashwatthama’s characters, he said, “Karna always felt incomplete to me. A warrior of his calibre deserved redemption and needed a final chapter. The entirety of the Mahabharata isn’t simply about good versus bad; it’s about individuals faced with circumstances where they must make choices.”

The director considers the clash between Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan a standout moment. He praises the confrontation between the evergreen hero Bachchan and the present-day action star Prabhas.

Further, Nag Ashwin said, “These individuals chose the wrong side, so perhaps redemption for them is fighting on the opposite side in this era.”

Kalki 2898 AD began with a box-office collection of ₹95.3 crore and has consistently performed well. The latest update confirms that it has surpassed the ₹400 crore mark in India.

Entering its second weekend at the box office, the sci-fi film achieved a new milestone as the quickest Indian movie to reach $14 million in gross earnings. This positions it to potentially surpass the North American collections of other significant Indian releases like Animal ($15 million), RRR ($15.15 million), and Jawan ($15.23 million).

Kalki 2898 AD features Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan in pivotal roles and is currently in cinemas.
