On his 41st birthday, 28 July, the makers of Dhanush’s upcoming film Kubera unveiled a new poster, featuring him with a slightly dishevelled look.

Sree Venkateswara Cinemas LLP shared the poster on X, praising Dhanush as a “phenomenal” actor and anticipating more “groundbreaking performances.”

The actor’s first look from Kubera was revealed in March 2024. Marking Dhanush’s 51st film, it was announced with the caption, “On the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri, we unveil the first look and motion poster of Kubera. Witness this man stirring up the proceedings in theatres soon.”

The announcement video shows Dhanush, with a scruffy beard and a smile, standing before a wall with a religious mural of Lord Shiva receiving alms from Annapurna, a form of Parvati. In Hindu mythology, Kubera is the god of wealth.

Kubera to release in December

Kubera, a social drama set in Mumbai’s Dharavi slums, went on floors earlier this year, featuring Dhanush alongside Jim Sarbh, Rashmika Mandanna, Akkineni Nagarjuna, Aparna Balamurali and Sundeep Kishan.

Directed by Sekhar Kammula in his first collaboration with Dhanush, Kubera aims for a December 2024 release.

National Award-winning composer Devi Sri Prasad is scoring the original music for this bilingual film, shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu, and will also be released in Hindi. The release date is yet to be announced.

Kammula is known for Telugu films like Godavari (2006), Happy Days (2007) and Love Story (2021).

Dhanush plays a homeless man in Kubera

A few months ago, reports indicated Dhanush was filmed near a garbage dump for over 10 hours to embody his role as a beggar. Despite safety measures like wearing a mask, this choice was seen as daring due to the harsh environment.

The news spread quickly on social media, with netizens praising his dedication to his craft. We hear the actor plays a homeless man who later becomes a mafia leader in Kubera.

Nagarjuna is playing a never-seen-before character as an investigative officer and the main antagonist, marking his first villain role. The first-look poster showed him in a crisp blue shirt and black trousers, holding an umbrella. His character, with shades of grey, will shift the movie’s tone.

This year, Dhanush starred in Captain Miller and followed up with Raayan, released on 26 July, which is nearing ₹50 crore in India and performing well globally.
