'Kalki 2898 AD' surpasses 'Jawan'. (X)
Kalki 2898 AD has achieved what it set out to do, surpassing the 2023 action thriller directed by Atlee, Jawan. It also became the fourth highest-grossing Indian film at the domestic box office.
Directed by Nag Ashwin, the Prabhas-starrer earned ₹640.6 crore nett in 40 days, edging out the Shah Rukh Khan’s film, which earned ₹640.25 crore nett in its lifetime run in India.
Although Baahubali 2 (2017) remains Prabhas’s biggest film with a lifetime nett total of ₹1030.42 crore, Kalki 2898 AD couldn’t surpass Yash’s KGF 2 (2022) and SS Rajamouli’s RRR (2022).
Despite still running in theatres into its sixth week, it is safe to assume Kalki 2898 AD won’t set any new records.
The Hindi version grossed around ₹350 crore and ₹290 crore nett, while the Telugu version grossed ₹335 crore, and the Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada versions collectively grossed around ₹75 crore.
The film is now nearing the end of its theatrical run and is expected to set new OTT viewing records upon its anticipated 23 August release on Amazon Prime Video, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Set in a dystopian future, Kalki 2898 AD revolves around the life of Bhairava (Prabhas), a formidable warrior with mysterious origins. As he navigates a world devastated by war and environmental collapse, he becomes entwined in an ancient prophecy.
Amitabh Bachchan plays Ashwatthama, an immortal from the Mahabharata, while Deepika Padukone’s Sumathi carries the unborn Kalki, an avatar of Vishnu.
Kamal Haasan portrays the antagonist, Supreme Yaskin. The film combines Indian mythology with futuristic technology, featuring epic battles that bridge physical and spiritual realms.
Kalki 2898 AD reveals that Bhairava, played by Prabhas, is a reincarnation of Karna from the Mahabharata, a warrior who faced tragic circumstances in the epic.
Nag Ashwin, in an interview, explained, “Karna always felt unfinished to me. A warrior like that needed redemption needed the last chapter.”
We hear the makers plan to resume shooting part two of the film soon. “We shot about 25 to 30 days, but there’s still a lot of action to film. It’s almost like starting a whole new production,” the director noted.
Discussing the sequel’s plot, Nag Ashwin hinted, “Every loose end must be tied up. The most crucial part will be the showdown between Yaskin, who now wields the Gandiva, considered the most powerful weapon, and Karna and Ashwatthama, the most fearsome warriors.”
Kalki 2898 AD blends Mahabharata with dystopian sci-fi. Director Nag Ashwin aimed to captivate young audiences, drawing from his love of Star Wars and Marvel films.
Part two will introduce a new world—the Flux Lands—expanding beyond the already explored Kasi, Complex, and Shambala.
