The epic dystopian sci-fi action film, Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Deepika Padukone, made a remarkable debut at the box office. It amassed a worldwide gross of ₹191.50 crore on its opening day.

Kalki 2898 AD also achieved the status of being the highest-grossing Indian film of all time at the North American box office. It earned more than $6 million on its opening day, surpassing SS Rajamouli’s 2022 action adventure film RRR, which made approximately $5.5 million.

The film equally performed strongly in Australia and New Zealand, surpassing the box office collections of Prabhas’s previous release, Salaar (2023). It earned A$457,958 in Australia and NZ$44,201 in New Zealand.

As per Sacnilk, Kalki 2898 AD grossed ₹64.5 crore from its Telugu screenings, ₹24 crore from Hindi, ₹4 crore from Tamil, and ₹ 2.2 crore from Malayalam.

Amidst the buzz surrounding the lead actors and the significant ₹600 crore budget allocated for the film, there are reports that many have approached producers seeking details on its day-one box office earnings to assess its success.

‘We make films for the love of cinema’

“It’s incredible that people are asking if we’ve broken records. It’s amusing because those who set records never made films with records in mind. We make films for the audience, for the love of cinema. That’s exactly what we did,” Swapna Dutt, producer of Kalki 2898 AD posted on X.

It is expected that the Telugu-speaking states alone will contribute approximately ₹58 crore to the film’s total box office earnings. Previously, only RRR, KGF: Chapter 2 (2022), and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), have crossed the elite ₹100 crore mark on their opening days.

On its first day of release, Kalki 2898 AD earned an impressive ₹95 crore in India, setting a new record for the highest opening day collection in Hindi cinema history, surpassing Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (2023).

On IMDb, Kalki 2898 AD has outperformed films like Vikram (2022) and Leo (2023). The Prabhas-starrer holds a rating of 8.4/10, surpassing Kamal Haasan’s film which has a rating of 7.2/10, and just slightly below the score of 8.3/10 earned by the Vijay-starrer.
