‘Kalki 2898 AD’ breaks box office records, earning ₹555 crore worldwide; Nag Ashwin reflects on early struggles

The Telugu version of the film leads its box office earnings with ₹167.5 crore, while the Hindi version, reportedly, brought in ₹115 crore.

Kalki 2898 AD, the epic dystopian sci-fi featuring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, and Kamal Haasan, is smashing records, both domestically and globally. Released on 27 June, the film, directed by Nag Ashwin, has grossed ₹555 crore worldwide within just four days, as announced by Vyjayanthi Movies.

The Telugu version of the film leads its box office earnings with ₹167.5 crore, while the Hindi version, reportedly, brought in ₹115 crore. The Tamil release contributed ₹18.3 crore to its total.

On Sunday, 30 June, the Telugu version of Kalki 2898 AD had an occupancy rate of 84.24%, followed by Tamil at 48.14%, Hindi at 65%, and Kannada at 64.25%.

 Kalki 2898 AD has broken numerous box office records, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024, within just three days of its release. It surpassed the opening day records of hits like KGF: Chapter 2 (2022) and Jawan (2023), although RRR (2022) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) still hold the top spots with ₹223 crore and ₹217 crore, on their respective opening days.

Notably, Kalki 2898 AD marks Prabhas’ second-largest opening after Baahubali 2. The film also made history by becoming the first Indian film to exceed $11 million (approximately ₹90.2 crore) in its opening weekend in North America.

Prabhas plays Bhairava, a bounty hunter from Kasi, and Deepika plays SUM-80, a pregnant test subject. Amitabh Bachchan takes on the role of Ashwatthama from Indian mythology, while Kamal Haasan plays Supreme Yaskin, the leader of the Complex. The film narrates Bhairava’s relentless pursuit to earn enough units to reside in the Complex, thwarted by the interference of Ashwatthama.

In Hindu mythology, Kalki is the tenth and ultimate avatar of Lord Vishnu. According to the epic poem Mahabharata, Kalki is prophesied to appear during a time of immense turmoil and chaos, heralding a final purification of the world.

Nag Ashwin, currently celebrating the acclaim and box office success of Kalki 2898 AD, expressed gratitude for the journey so far in a heartfelt note, accompanied by a photo with wife-producer Priyanka Dutt and producer Swapna Dutt, on Instagram.

 He acknowledged there is room for improvement but expressed pride in their achievements together over the past decade.

Nag Ashwin’s directorial journey began in 2015 with the coming-of-age film Yevade Subramanyam, followed by the highly successful biopic, Mahanati (2018) on actor Savitri, featuring Keerthy Suresh in the lead, which garnered National Awards.
