Unlike the regular commercial masala drama that revolves around a hero, heroine, and the other usual elements, Tanuja is inspired by a real-life incident of a girl.

An inspiring tale, it depicts how she overcomes hurdles to realise her dream of studying medicine.

Every one of us chases our dreams but only a few reach the destination. Tanuja is special for the reason that she is one of us who believes that anything is possible if there is a will to do so.

Inspiring tale

Director Harish came across an article written about a farmer’s daughter living in a remote village in Shivamogga district. The story happened when the Covid-19 pandemic was at its peak. He turned the incidents into a movie. And, he does it with near perfection.

As far as the tale is concerned, Tanuja (Saptha Pavoor) comes from a humble background and works hard to make it to the Navodaya school.

With the help of her mentor (Rajesh Nataranga), she almost cracks the NEET examination on her first attempt. But just falls short by a few ranks.

The actual story in the film is webbed around the day Tanuja is to appear for her next NEET examination in Bengaluru.

This time, the examination is held following the Supreme Court directions, to benefit those students who could not appear due to strict Covid-19 restrictions implemented in their respective States.

In Tanuja’s case, a technical glitch denied her admission ticket to appear for the NEET exam.

Apart from a few cinematic liberties, the filmmaker has not meddled with the core subject.

The movie portrays a real-life character in the best possible manner, right from senior journalist Vishveshwar Bhat to the then Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa and the medical education minister Dr K Sudhakar.

It is through them, mainly Tanuja’s mentor, that the drama unfolds.

Decent act

Surprisingly, the film runs at a steady pace with dramatic twists and turns to keep the audience on the edge of their seats.

With only a handful of characters and Tanuja in focus, the rest do justice to their roles.

Saptha Pavoor, who made an impressive debut in Sarkari Hiriya Prathamika Shaale, showcases her acting talent as Tanuja.

Verdict

In a nutshell, Tanuja is a good watch for the simplest reason to realise that where there is a will, there is a way. A must-watch for school/college-going children!
