Reports suggest that Vikram’s Thangalaan is set to release on 15 August, coinciding with Independence Day. While an official announcement from the makers is awaited, producer Dhananjayan disclosed in an interview with Galatta Tamil, that the film will be released, in cinemas, on this national holiday.

Thangalaan is currently in its post-production phase. Originally slated for 26 January, the release has been postponed, owing to unknown reasons. Last year, filming was temporarily paused because Vikram sustained a rib injury on set. After a brief hiatus, shooting resumed and the production was completed.

Directed by Pa Ranjith, Thangalaan features Parvathy Thiruvothu and Malavika Mohanan in prominent roles, alongside Pasupathy, Hollywood actor Daniel Caltagirone, and Harikrishnan Anbudurai.

The narrative of Thangalaan unfolds against the historical backdrop of the Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), highlighting the overlooked contributions of marginalised communities in South India’s gold exploration. The film is a joint production of Studio Green and Neelam Productions.

Azhagiya Periyvan, who has previously penned dialogues for Election (2024) starring Vijaya Kumar, described Thangalaan as a fictional film, inspired by real-life events from the 1800s. The period presented a significant challenge for the scriptwriting process, he was quoted, as saying, in an interview.

GV Prakash provides the music, marking his first collaboration with Pa Ranjith. Tamil Prabha serves as co-writer, while Selva RK and SS Murthi handle editing and art direction respectively.

The filming of Thangalaan incorporates live sound, which is a significant aspect of the production. To mark actor Vikram’s 57th birthday in April this year, the makers released a behind-the-scenes video, showcasing the rigorous process involved in his transformation into the character “son of gold”.

This 50-second clip captures Vikram’s fruitful journey, from lengthy sessions in the makeup chair to performing intense action sequences in sweltering conditions. The video underscores Vikram’s reputation for perseverance, determination, and unwavering commitment to his craft.

Director Ranjith said, “We aimed to present a historical adventure rooted in real events, bolstered by Vikram’s exceptional dedication and the collective effort of the entire team.”

The 90-second teaser of Thangalaan also offers glimpses into a story depicting a tribal leader’s struggle against those scheming to seize their land for gold mining.

The film will be released in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi.
