Captain Prabhakaran to re release

Actor Vijayakanth’s 100th film Captain Prabhakaran, released in 1991, is all set to re-release across Tamil Nadu after 34 years.

The film remastered to 4K quality, will hit the screens on 22 August, ahead of the late actor-turned-politician’s birthday on 25 August.

The action film directed by RK Selvamani, features Mansoor Ali Khan, Rupini, Livingston and Ramya Krishnan in key roles, while R Sarathkumar appears in a cameo role. It was the film which popularised the moniker “captain” for him.

In the film, Prabhakaran, a sincere police officer, is assigned to find Veerabhadran, a sandalwood smuggler around Tamilnadu-Karnataka border.

The film is being released by Sparrow Cinemas. Sharing the news, they wrote on X: “‘Captain Prabhakaran’ marks its 34th anniversary with a grand re-release in 4K on August 22 in 500+ theaters! Released on Captain Vijayakanth’s birthday by Sparrow Cinemas. #CaptainPrabhakaran #ReRelease #TamilCinema”

According to a Cinema Express report, during a press meet that was organised to share the news, director RK Selvamani said, “Captain Prabhakaran, which was shot in film, has been digitised, restored and will be released across the state. I was skeptical of how it will be received by audience after three decades. When I rewatched it, I realised that it feels like it has been shot today. Every shot feels like it was taken with the technology that we have today back then. I had the same feeling that I had when I watched it back then as I was watching it recently.”

The actor, who founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016.
