Telugu and Hindi audiences might not have liked GOAT since it highlighted CSK, says Venkat Prabhu

Vijay’s The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) is a super hit in Tamil Nadu. According to its producers, the movie crossed the ₹300 crore mark at the global box office on the fifth day.

However, the movie isn’t performing well in Kerala, which typically has a strong market for Tamil cinema. Vijay’s previous movie Leo collected ₹50 crore from the Kerala box office.

The Vijay-Venkat Pbahu film is also underperforming in the Telugu states and North India.

Additionally, it hasn’t been released in multiplexes in North India due to a policy by a powerful group stating that only films with an eight-week OTT window can be screened in multiplexes. Since GOAT is expected to premiere on Netflix in eight weeks, it hasn’t been released in these multiplexes.

Given the circumstances, director Venkat Prabhu recently shared his thoughts on why GOAT did not connect with Telugu and Hindi-speaking audiences.

During a conversation with fans on X Spaces, Venkat offered an interesting perspective on this issue in his usual humorous style.

According to him, audiences outside Tamil Nadu didn’t resonate with the Vijay-starrer because of its focus on Chennai Super Kings (CSK). In the movie, the climax takes place at Chepauk Stadium during a CSK match, where Vijay’s character has to diffuse a bomb.

Venkat felt that this emphasis on CSK in the climax scene could be why GOAT didn’t receive a positive response outside Tamil Nadu.

On a lighter note, he joked that fans of rival IPL teams like Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) might have taken issue with the film. “We are all CSK fans—it’s in our blood, and we can’t deny that,” Venkat Prabhu said.

The filmmaker added that this deep-rooted connection to the CSK might explain why the Telugu and Hindi audiences didn’t engage with the film in the same way.

GOAT marks Vijay’s 68th movie. It had a notable opening day in India by earning ₹44 crore net. Of this, ₹39.15 crore came from Tamil Nadu. The film grossed ₹ 1.85 crore in Hindi and ₹3 crore in Telugu.
