Tamil actor Delhi Ganesh cremated with Air Force honours in Chennai

Delhi Ganesh served in the force for a decade from 1964 to 1974 before venturing into the films in 1976.

Tamil veteran actor Delhi Ganesh passed away on the night of Saturday, 9 November, due to ill health aged 80 years.

The actor’s mortal remains were kept at his residence in Chennai, for his family and well-wishers to pay their respects.

On Monday, 11 November, the actor was cremated with the honours of the Air Force, by placing an IAF ensign on him, as the actor served in the force for a decade from 1964 to 1974 before venturing into the films in 1976.

According to reports, several cinema stars and politicians attended the funeral of Delhi Ganesh to pay their last respects to Delhi Ganesh.

The actor, who was last seen in Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2 has worked in over 400 films across Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. He was also known for his versatility, playing comic, villain and supporting roles and creating an everlasting legacy.

Ganesh made his film debut in 1976 with Pattina Pravesam, directed by the legendary K Balachander.

According to NDTV, it was the ace director, who also gave him the stage name “Delhi Ganesh”, as he was part of a Delhi-based theatre group Dakshina Bharata Nataka Sabha.

He then went on to do many memorable roles including, Engamma Maharani (1981), Indhu Bhairavi (1985), Nayakan (1987), Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990), Aahaa..! (1997) and Thenali (2000).

He was also awarded Kalaimamani by the Tamil Nadu state government for his achievement in cinema.

Condolences pour in

As the news of his demise spread, actors, leaders and many others expressed their condolences.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister expressed his condolences.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, wrote on X, “Deeply saddened by the passing of the illustrious film personality, Thiru Delhi Ganesh Ji. He will be fondly remembered for the depth he brought to each role and for his ability to connect with viewers across generations. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi through the official Raj Bhavan handle expressed his condolences, he said, “Thiru Delhi Ganesh, with his unmatched versatility, breathed life into countless characters, transcending genres and leaving an indelible mark on the world of cinema and theatre. His demise has left a void that would be very difficult to fill. My deepest condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Actors Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Karthi and many others also expressed grief.

Kamal Haasan wrote on X in Tamil: “The news of Delhi Ganesh’s demise is deeply saddened. A rare character actor who handles comedy with subtlety. It will not be easy to replace him. The moments I spent with him were sweet and memorable. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family of Annan Ganesh. I share the pain of my friends from the film industry who are obsessed with him.”

Rajinikanth wrote: “My friend Delhi Ganesh is a wonderful man. Amazing actor. I am saddened to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti.”
